Why Your Brand Personality Matters More Than You Think

Branding

One of the most interesting things I notice when working with clients is the gap that can sometimes exist between who they actually are and how their brand shows up online.

And it’s not because they’re trying to mislead anyone. It’s usually the opposite.

Most people are just trying to do things “right.”

When someone starts building their website or brand, they naturally begin looking around at others in their industry. They look at websites they admire, Pinterest boards, Instagram accounts, competitors, templates. They start noticing patterns.

Certain colors.
Certain layouts.
Certain tones of voice.

And slowly, without even realizing it, they start shaping their brand around those patterns.

The logic makes sense. If everyone else is doing it this way, there must be a reason.

But here’s the catch.

Sometimes in the process of trying to fit the industry, people accidentally start sanding down the very personality that would have set them apart in the first place.

When Your Brand Doesn’t Match Your Personality

I see this happen a lot, especiallyyyy in the wedding industry. For example, a Wedding Planner:

Sometimes I’ll come across a planner’s website and the branding feels very soft and delicate. Lots of light neutrals. Minimal text. Very polished. Very quiet.

It has that typical “wedding aesthetic” we’ve all seen a hundred times.

And then I meet the planner in person.

And she’s bold.
She’s hilarious.
She has huge energy.
She’s the type of person who can command a room and make everyone feel instantly at ease.

Suddenly the website feels like it’s describing a completely different person.

And that disconnect matters more than people realize.

Because your website isn’t just a portfolio. It’s the first impression of what it feels like to work with you.

When that impression doesn’t match reality, you end up attracting the wrong people. Or worse, you end up missing the people who would have ADORED you.

The Real Goal Isn’t to Match Your Industry

A lot of people assume that branding is about fitting into the aesthetic of their niche.

But the strongest brands actually do the opposite.

They reflect the actual experience of working with the person behind the business.

Think about it.

Within any industry, there are so many different personalities.

Even in something like wedding planning, there isn’t just one type of planner.

There’s the planner who feels calm and elegant, like the effortlessly polished host who quietly runs the entire event with grace.

There’s the planner who walks into the room and instantly takes command. Confident, charismatic, clearly running the show.

There’s the planner who feels like your best friend, they keep the entire experience light and fun, cracking jokes, making everyone laugh, and reminding the couple to ENJOY the evening.

And there’s the ultra-creative planner who treats every wedding like a design moment, curating each detail the way a creative director would style a fashion editorial.

None of those personalities are better than the others.

But they attract very different couples.

And that’s the point.

Your Personality Is the Strategy

One of the biggest misconceptions about branding is that personality needs to be toned down in order to feel “professional.”

In reality, personality is usually the thing that makes a brand magnetic.

When your brand reflects who you actually are (think: your tone, your energy, the way you interact with clients) it creates alignment.

The right people immediately recognize themselves in your work.

They feel like they’ve found their person.

And that’s what turns a website from something that simply looks nice into something that actually converts.

The Question Worth Asking

So if you’re building or refining your brand, the question isn’t:

“What does everyone else in my industry look like?”

The better question is:

What does it actually feel like to work with me?

Is your brand reflecting that?

Or did some of your personality get lost along the way?

Because the goal of a great brand isn’t to blend in with the industry.

It’s to create a presence that makes the right people think,

“Oh… this one feels like me.”

Ready to Build a Brand That Feels Like You?

If you’re starting to realize that your brand might not fully reflect who you actually are, that’s exactly the kind of work I love helping clients unpack.

Together, we look at the personality behind your business, the experience you create for your clients, and how to translate that into a brand and website that truly feels like you.

If that sounds like the direction you’re heading, I’d love to connect and hear more about what you’re building.
